Our Story

Joseph Carbone, a board-certified optician, is the founder and president of EyeCare4Kids. He began his career in New York City in 1975. He recognized the issue that many underprivileged families face not being able to afford or have access to professional eye care for their children. In 2001, he left his private practice to launch EyeCare4Kids. It is a nonprofit dedicated to providing as many kids as possible with eye care services. Now, nearly 25 years later, EyeCare4Kids is working with Leon Pottas and Miguel Gomes, two dynamic South Africans as we take EyeCare4Kids to Africa.

Meet Sonia Shivambu, a passionate optometrist who is making a huge difference to her home and business communities.

Sonia grew up in a small village in Limpopo.

“My grandmother suffered from glaucoma and I watched her struggle to find treatment and struggle to see.” says Sonia.

Having qualified as an optometrist, Sonia now works in Soweto South Africa but she also runs several interventions into rural areas in South Africa

“In the village and areas in Limpopo where I am from there are 2 optometrists who service 19 clinics across vast distances.

As a result many people don’t have access to eye care and that is something I want to change.” she says.

In June 2024 Sonia ran a 3 day sight outreach program in Limpopo where she and her team tested the sight of adults and children in the community. Of the children tested who required glasses EyeCare4Kids™ Africa provided beautiful, stylish and script-specific spectacles to the children in the community. The EyeCare4Kids™ Africa support has enabled Sonia to fulfil her dream of providing screening and eye care to children regardless of their socio-economic bacground.

All children should be given the opportunity to see well!
